Shakeology Benefits

The keys to getting fit are exercise, nutrition and support. But if you’re like a lot of people—myself included—it’s hard to make good food choices when you’re running hither and yon. Lately, my family has been augmenting our eat-on-the-go food choices with the Shakeology nutritional shake. Beachbody calls Shakeology  “The Healthiest Meal of the Day.” But what is it?

Shakeology is a nutritional shake that contains more than 70 all natural ingredients from around the world—including 23 vitamins and minerals.

It is such a complete source of nutrients that many people use it as a meal replacement shake—great for breakfast, lunch or eating on the run. It comes in Chocolate, Greenberry and the brand new Vegan Tropical Strawberry.

So what’s so great about Shakeology? For less than the cost of a daily latte from Starbucks, you get a drink high in proteins, amino acids, prebiotics, digestive enzymes, antioxidants, phytonutrients and contains 23 vitamins and minerals

What are the benefits?

  • More energy. You know that feeling you get when you eat something super healthy? That’s what you get—that healthy buzz.
  • Reduced appetite. You really do feel fuller, longer.
  • Less cravings. When hunger hits, it isn’t for junk.
  • Improved digestion. Without naming names, I know people who talk about things like “regularity” when discussing all of the wonderful things Shakeology does for their GI systems. I will spare you the details.
  • Complete source of nutrients. Often people stop taking other vitamins and nutritional supplements after they start taking Shakeology.
  • Lower cholesterol.
  • (P.S. My husband assures me it is a great hangover remedy.)

No-Bake Shakeology Cookies = No-Guilt Treats

My family LOVES dessert. My 11-year-old has been known to start asking for something sweet as soon as he wakes up in the morning. (I have to admit that he comes by his sweet tooth honestly—from both of his parents.) But this recipe for No-Bake Shakeology Cookies–which I found on the Shakeology website–may be a solution to our problem. These cookies are essentially chocolate-peanut butter balls, but better because they incorporate Shakeology–a nutritional protein shake. I made the cookies yesterday and my kids devoured them. When my son asked me for “cookies” at 6:30 am this morning, I said, “Sure. Take two.”

Tips:

  • The original recipe called for almond butter, but I only had peanut butter on hand. I also used non-organic honey.
  • Measuring honey and peanut butter can be a sticky mess, so I sprayed the measuring cups with non-stick spray. The ingredients just slid right out without sticking. I also sprayed non-stick spray on my hands before rolling the ingredients into balls.
  • These are very rich, so roll them into small balls. I made mine the size of large truffles, but next time I’ll make them smaller.
  • Consider cutting the recipe in half. The recipe made at least 20-25 medium-sized cookies, which is a lot even for my family of 5.
  • Enjoy!

Shakeology Cookie Recipe:
1 cup of raw almond butter (I used peanut butter)
1 cup of organic oatmeal (quick)
1/3 to 1/2 cup of organic honey (according to desired sweetness)
1 cup of Chocolate Shakeology (about two scoops)
Combine in bowl and mix well. Roll into balls (about a heaping teaspoon).
Optional: Roll the balls in crushed nuts or unsweetened coconut flakes before serving.

New Shakeology Flavor: Vegan Tropical Strawberry Nutritional Shake

There’s a new flavor of Shakeology on the block … Vegan Tropical Strawberry Shakeology. The new flavor of Beachbody’s nutritional shake—which has been in the works for a while—will finally be available February 14, 2012. So what took so long? It can be difficult to find a vegan protein that tastes good and isn’t gritty.  After much searching, Beachbody finally found a winner in fermented sprouted brown rice.

The new flavor is good for:

Vegans. The other Shakeology flavors–Chocolate and Greenberry—contain whey protein isolate, which is derived from milk products.

Variety-seekers. It’s always good to have options—especially tasty ones.

Those looking for easy breakfast solutions. The subtle taste make it perfect for the morning, and experts agree that eating breakfast is key to weight loss.

People who want a natural approach to food. Vegan Tropical Strawberry Shakeology is less processed than the other flavors, which means it is as close to raw or whole foods as possible.

Families. All of the flavors of Shakeology are good for families–especially if you’re like us, and eat on the run–but the subtle strawberry taste should please kids and parents alike. And for an extra treat, add a banana.

And watch out. There should be more flavors in the vegan line to come.

Shakeology for Kids?

Shakeology for KidsMy husband and I have wrestled with the question of whether or not to give Shakeology to our kids. My husband drinks Shakeology every day. He loves the energy he gets from Shakeology and the knowledge that he’s getting all of the vitamins he needs. So my three boys—ages 4, 8 and 11—beg to drink Shakeology like Daddy.
Like a lot of people, we don’t always eat a healthy diet. The kids are picky eaters, and we often eat on the go. So the kids could definitely benefit from Shakeology’s 70 vitamins and minerals. And if it could curb the cravings that lead them to ask for treats from the time they wake up in the morning, I would be thrilled.

So I checked the official website. The company gives a pretty typical disclaimer about checking with your doctor, but the website goes on to say:

“However, since Shakeology® is a healthy drink that’s low in sugar and has a wide variety of nutrients, it’s a much healthier option than many other drinks or snacks on the market and should be appropriate for most children over the age of 6. You may want to start out with a smaller serving size until you’re sure of the child’s tolerance. It’s not recommended to give as a meal replacement for children younger than 6 years old without first checking with your pediatrician.”

Our answer has been to:

  • Give it to them occasionally—a few times a week.

And

  • Split one package between three kids. That way they don’t get overloaded with vitamins.

When Carl Daikeler—Beachbody CEO and a father of two small children—was recently asked about giving Shakeology to kids, he said the company had not tested the effects on children. But he wondered if giving Shakeology was any worse than giving them fast food or any of the other processed, preservative laden foods we give to our kids. He definitely had a point.
